The day of wine

Legend has it that vines used to grow only in heaven. After Adam and Eve were banned from paradise, vine leaves formed part of their wardrobe. It is said that the Almighty took pity on the first inhabitants of the earth and gave them the vine. This was so that, by cultivating it, they might discover the secret of immortality.
Perhaps this is why in Moldova wine is considered to be the drink of life.
In Moldova - the only country, the shape of which, when seen on a map, resembles the shape of a bunch of grapes - local tradition idolised this drink, which preserves the freshness of the morning dew, as well as the natural purity and the vigorous richness of the soil. A strong drink in Moldova is called "divine" boasts an unprecedented taste and bouquet. Moldovan "divines" produced at Chisinau, Calarasi, Bardar, Balti, Tiraspol or other wineries have long proclaimed the excellence of the wine makers of Moldova. The wine route is probably the best way to discover the essence of Moldova.

Moldova is a European country with a rich centuries-old history and culture. Popular traditions make an important part of the country’s cultural heritage. It is interesting that the multi-ethnic character of this territory has not destroyed the local traditional way of life, but on the contrary, has enriched it with new colors and transformed it into an original bunch of customs, rituals, and ceremonies, which have preserved in Moldovan villages    till today.
Hospitality is a peculiar quality of the Moldavians. Every guest receives a cordial, warm welcome
.
Today the Wine Festival is celebrated all over the republic. The aim of the Sarbatoarea Vinului is to return to the national cradles, to revive the traditions and to preserve the continuity of generations, to unite people irrespective of their political views, social status or financial situation.
The opening of the festival took place on the Central Square with a procession of wine-makers – leaders in the wine-making industry of Moldova. Big trucks and small horse-harnessed wheel carts escorted by various folklore ensembles in national costumes paraded through the downtown area and along the streets of Chisinau. Then the festival continued on the territory of the Moldexpo international exhibition center where wine-makers exhibited their best products and offered them for sale. Moldexpo hosted a number of popular folk bands and invited different Moldovan performers. The wine festival also played the role of a school of wine-tasting skills. Various Moldovan wine brands were available for tasting. A number of professional competitions among the participants of the festival were held. The best were awarded presidential honors. A big concert with the participation of Moldovan popular interpreters and a fireworks show on the Chisinau Central Square completed the festival.
The wine festival was a two-day event where all the major wine producers would come to city center to present their products. There was also a stage with traditional music and dance performances. The festival was mostly to celebrate new wine which some stands offered for free, others charging nominal amounts such as one Moldovan lei (about 0.07 euros) per cup. Older wines were available in bottles but I was a bit surprised that there wasn't any organized tasting of them.
